Contests in Higher Mathematics: Hungary 1949–1961 — In Memoriam Miklós Schweitzer”

Some mathematical competitions test speed and technique. The Miklós Schweitzer Mathematical Competition was created with a more ambitious goal: to identify university students capable of genuine mathematical research.

The classic volume Contests in Higher Mathematics: Hungary, 1949–1961 — In Memoriam Miklós Schweitzer collects the problems from the first thirteen years of this remarkable Hungarian competition.

The competition was established in 1949 by the János Bolyai Mathematical Society and was named in memory of the young Hungarian mathematician Miklós Schweitzer. Its purpose was not simply to reward good problem solvers, but to encourage independent mathematical thinking and help identify future researchers.

What makes the Schweitzer Competition unusual?

Its problems often go well beyond routine university exercises. They may require ideas from several areas of mathematics, unusual insight, and methods close to those used in mathematical research.

The book contains problems from 1949 through 1961, together with contest results and solutions. The topics range across algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, combinatorics and other areas of higher mathematics.

It was edited by G. Szász, L. Gehér, I. Kovács and L. Pintér and published by Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, in 1968.

For students interested in olympiad-style mathematics beyond the secondary-school level, this collection offers something particularly valuable: a bridge from advanced problem solving toward research-level mathematical thinking.

A remarkable collection for anyone who enjoys mathematics
when problem solving begins to resemble research.
